A Mental Wellness Checklist

We hope this checklist is helpful for you to go through as you process the difficult season you may find yourself in currently. There is help, there is hope - together we can find a way forward.

Mental Wellness Checklist 

  1. Company: Know You are Not Alone; many More exactly like us walk this journey. 

  2. Courage: We must have courage and persevere; we must finish the obstacle course we call "Life."

  3. Process: Healing is a process; we must count victories by small progress each day, we will feel different a year from now.

  4. Light: Darkness now is temporary; light eventually overtakes darkness.

  5. Control: Learn to Control what you can control and surrender to God what you do not understand (James Chapter 1 Helps).

  6. Love: Love Hopes for all things. Share the love we had for those lost with other loved ones.  Don't hold back; spread love to those we care for most.

  7. Commitment: We must live by hope and live with no doubt.

  8. Boundaries: Prevent your mind from straying back to negative events.

  9. Toolbox: Build a toolbox of ways to escape pain and darkness; one conversation or one list like this can change our life.

  10. Persistence: Practice positive recovery habits over and over; even when they do not provide immediate relief, eventually, relief will come.

  11. Season: There is a season to mourn and a season to heal and recover. This chapter in our life will pass into another chapter to be shared with loved ones.

  12. Charity: Choose love and do not harden your heart; give back even when you don't feel like it.

  13. Time: Give yourself time, and don't be in a hurry. Time heals all wounds, but we always remember and never forget.

  14. Happy Place: Get away from the house. Travel to a "happy place".

  15. Sunshine: Get outdoors in sunshine as much as possible; vitamin D is essential.

  16. Cry: Spend once in a while crying your eyes out, but limit it to one hour and then go get busy.

  17. Work: Don't be afraid to work at work, we all need purpose.

  18. Showers: Take cold showers.

  19. Cold Shock: Go outside in cold weather with little clothing.

  20. Hydration: Drink cold water; our nerves are heightened, and need something cool. 

  21. Remove Blame: Learn to Love yourself; it is not your fault.

  22. Drugs: Keep away from alcohol and non-prescription drugs; they both actually delay recovery.

  23. Medication: Don't be afraid to take prescription anxiety pills for a short period.

  24. Exercise: Workout until exhausted; get a workout partner.

  25. Friends: Don't spend time alone; travel with a friend.

  26. Lights: Turn all lights in the house on high bright.

  27. Decorate: Repaint rooms to be white or brightly covered, and remove drapes.

  28. Pictures: Take down pictures that make you sad or turn them on their back.

  29. Keep Sakes: Store them away one room at a time, gradually over time, in a place you can revisit when you are better.

  30. Activity: Stay in constant motion, be active, and spend time outdoors.

  31. Music: Listen to loud or relaxing music.

  32. Joy: Whenever possible, create a joyful memory for someone that will last a lifetime.

  33. Live: Allow yourself to "Live", Being alive is the most precious gift we have. What a world this would be if we each made a continuous effort to create pleasant and uplifting experiences for each other.

  34. Small Steps: Baby steps; live one day at a time. Focus on doing just a few things well; our spiritual life will go to a new level.

  35. Thanks: Give thanks in all things; this will relieve anger.

  36. Wisdom: Pray for Wisdom and not things. 

  37. Vengeance: Never retaliate; God will repay.

  38. Faith: In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.

  39. Humility: Remember Who you are; this gives humility.

  40. Trust: Trust in the Lord with all your heart; this relieves worry.

  41. Control: Know God is in control.

  42. Honor: Honor your parents. Do something you learned from them, whether they are alive or in Heaven.

  43. Bible: Read the Bible for 5 minutes a day.

  44. Believe: Trust Him in all things and in all circumstances.

  45. Time: Time is a precious gift from God, patiently allowing all our trials sufficient opportunity to mature us spiritually.  

  46. Pray: In everything, give thanks; so many have been in this world are denied the privilege to pray.

  47. Good Times: Remember when you first met your wife and remember what it felt like.

  48. Three is Company: One secret to recovery is to find three that are not close friends to help you recover.

  49. Scriptures: Find scriptures that move you and help you take action. Obsess on the words that give your life meaning and purpose. 

  50. Surrender: Devote your life to serving God and not  man.  It is only when we let go 100 percent, are we truly free.
